Topic: Google Earth elevation data

Hi,

thank you for your very quick response last time.

I want to use elevation data for the map, but the data from Bing Maps is very inaccurate (it seems) compared to other services like Google Earth. See screenshots attached.

Is there a way to get the Google Earth elevation data and apply it to the Map instead of Bing?
And if so, how would you do that with your API?

Thank you in advance. If you need more information, please let me know.

Re: Google Earth elevation data

Hello.

Using Online Maps API, you can intercept the request to download the elevation data, and load elevation data from any source (SRTM, Google Elevation API, etc).
Example:
http://infinity-code.com/atlas/online-m … ample.html

But really there is no other good online source of elevation data (or I just do not know about this source).
Google Elevation API can not get elevation data for area (only location or path).

If you know a good source of elevation data, just let me know.

Re: Google Earth elevation data

Hello,

We have experienced very poor responses to request elevation data using Bing API.
It looks like google maps api is much more reliable then Bing.
Even if we can't use it for area it's possible to setup a request for an array of values or using an
Encoded Polyline Algorithm Format (see https://developers.google.com/maps/docu … ro?hl=en).

We could develop on our own branch code but it would be much better if it would be integrated to the main source code of online maps.
Is it something that you envision developing at some stage?

Thank you

Regards

Re: Google Earth elevation data

Hello.

I do not like the idea of making a request with manual listing all the points for which need to return elevations. At least you can be faced with a limits of length of GET request.
We will try to implement it. But I'm not sure that it will work at all, and work the same on all platforms.

You can use ArcGIS Elevation API, as an alternative to Bing Maps Elevation API.
If you want, I can send an example.

Hello,
Yes an example could be usefull.
Thank you in advance.

Re: Google Earth elevation data

Thank you for the example.
ESRI seems to works better than Bings. Indeed in zome area Bing API won't be able to send us Elevations.
With ESRI o not have any issues right now.

We did some test on the google maps API. Indeed, we must be careful on the limits of length of GET request, but we can easily handle it.

The big issue is not on the quantity but more on the accuracy. On the documentation we can read :
“You may pass any number of multiple coordinates within an array or encoded polyline, as long as you don't exceed the service quotas, while still constructing a valid URL. Note that when passing multiple coordinates, the accuracy of any returned data may be of lower resolution than when requesting data for a single coordinate.”

Indeed when we test to request a 32x32 array of elevation the results was not accurate enough.

Thank you for your time.

Re: Google Earth elevation data

I'm trying to use this example (TestESRIElevations.cs) with Fly-Demo-Scene.

In "OnlineMapsTileSetControls.cs", GetElevation() is called with OnAwakBefore() before Start() has been called up in "TestESRIElevations.cs" and "control.OnGetElevation + = OnGetElevation" can be called.
For this reason, in GetElevation() "OnGetElevation" is equal to null and the Bing data is retrieved (with StartDownloadElevation). OnGetElevation(...) in "TestESRIElevations.cs" is never called.

What do I need to change? I have not had a very big experience in Unity, maybe it's a beginner's mistake ...

Re: Google Earth elevation data

Hello.

That's a great question.
Unfortunately, I do not remember why we added this line in Online Maps v1.6 (three years ago).
This is wrong. The first request should be much later.
So you can just comment out this line (in OnAwakBefore).
We will remove this line in the next update.

Re: Google Earth elevation data

Thanks for your feedback. In the "OnlineMapsTileSetControls.cs" file, the line UpdateMapMesh() (at the very end) must also be comment out in InitMapMesh().
InitMapMesh() is also called in OnAwakeBefore(). UpdateMapMesh() calls GetElevation() at the very beginning...
It works for me now. I hope, the comment lines have no side effects... ;-)

Re: Google Earth elevation data

Thanks for the info.
It is better to do this way:

bool isIgnore = ignoreGetElevation;
ignoreGetElevation = true;
UpdateMapMesh();
ignoreGetElevation = isIgnore;
